John R. Valentine is a Member of Illumine Legal. Mr. Valentine has significant experience in both estate planning and trust and estate administration, as well as the representation of tax-exempt organizations.

Mr. Valentine’s estate planning practice involves counseling clients and drafting documents to address the tax, family, medical, asset management, probate, and other concerns that are part of the planning process. He advises clients on various charitable giving techniques, including the use of private foundations, donor-advised funds, and split-interest trusts. Mr. Valentine assists clients in probate and trust/estate administration matters, including the representation of fiduciaries in judicial proceedings. He also represents closely held and family businesses on various tax and corporate concerns.

In his tax-exempt organization’s practice, Mr. Valentine represents a wide variety of tax-exempt organizations, including private foundations, churches and other religious organizations, hospitals, educational organizations, tax-exempt social clubs, and tax-exempt research organizations. Mr. Valentine enjoys the wide variety of organizations represented by his practice and the passion each organization brings to its cause.

Mr. Valentine is well-versed in the Colorado Revised Nonprofit Corporation Act and frequently advises clients on issues pertaining to nonprofit corporate law. In particular, he is adept at advising boards of directors regarding their fiduciary duties and compliance with corporate formalities.

Mr. Valentine also advises nonprofit organizations on significant transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, dissolution, and purchases and sales of assets. Mr. Valentine’s nonprofit clients also frequently ask him to advise them on a wide variety of operational contracts. In addition, Mr. Valentine provides advice to charitable organizations regarding the rules related to soliciting charitable contributions in Colorado.

Mr. Valentine has been a frequent speaker at the annual Institute on Advising Nonprofit Corporations in Colorado, which is sponsored by the Colorado Bar Association.
